Including Uganda's 20 cases and two deaths and one imported case in France, the outbreak total is 5,815 cases and 2,788 deaths. At least 1,314 patients have recovered. In the latest 24-hour period, DRC reported 81 new confirmed cases from 19 health zones, while 82.3% of identified contacts were followed up. Health-worker vaccination with Ervebo began in parts of DRC on 27 August, with effectiveness against Bundibugyo virus in humans still unknown.

WHO IHR Committee: Bundibugyo epidemic remains a PHEIC but not a pandemic emergency
WHO published the report of the second IHR Emergency Committee meeting and confirmed that the DRC epidemic continues to meet the criteria for a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, but not a pandemic emergency. The Committee described the continued rapid growth and geographic expansion as a grave concern. Modelling presented to the Committee suggests substantial under-ascertainment, with true infections potentially three to four times higher than surveillance totals, and calls for urgent, intensified and sustained action centred on affected communities.

WHO and Africa CDC: Uganda completes 42-day countdown and ends Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak
Uganda completed 42 consecutive days without a new confirmed case after the last imported patient was discharged on 16 July. The country reported 20 confirmed cases—15 imported and five locally acquired—along with 18 recoveries and two deaths; more than 800 contacts were identified and monitored. WHO and Africa CDC said sustained surveillance, testing capacity, infection prevention and cross-border coordination remain essential because transmission continues in neighbouring DRC.

ECDC records 792 patients in isolation, 1,245 recoveries, 80.9% of identified contacts under follow-up, and transmission in 58 of 151 health zones across six provinces. DRC totals remain under continuous review and harmonisation.

WHO and Africa CDC: outbreak response must expand two- to three-fold after 100 days
WHO and Africa CDC leaders said the response must expand to two or three times its current capacity, prioritising hard-to-reach communities, frontline-worker protection, early detection, safe care, contact tracing, and safe burials. Their joint commentary reported that 158 health workers had been infected and 45 had died as of 20 August, while several health zones in northern Ituri and South Kivu had interrupted transmission.

First DRC Ebola patient discharged after two negative tests; Uganda confirmed cases rise to 9
WHO confirmed that the first Ebola patient in DRC has achieved clinical recovery and been discharged from an Ebola care centre following two consecutive negative PCR tests — 'This is the first one' to be discharged, said WHO technical officer Anais Legand. The milestone offers the first proof-of-concept that the outbreak response can achieve recovery. Separately, confirmed cases in Uganda have risen from 7 to 9, with 1 death unchanged. The DRC toll remains at approximately 900+ suspected cases and 220+ suspected deaths per Congolese authorities as of 29 May.

Oxford University ChAdOx1 Bundibugyo vaccine in animal trials; WHO risk level raised to 'very high' in DRC
Scientists at Oxford University are developing a Bundibugyo-specific Ebola vaccine using the same ChAdOx1 adenovirus vector technology used in the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine. Animal testing is now underway; if successful, human clinical trials could begin within 2–3 months. The Serum Institute of India is lined up for mass production once Oxford can supply medical-grade material. A separate Bundibugyo vaccine candidate is 6–9 months from testing. The WHO has raised its risk level assessment for the DRC to 'very high', and for the wider region to 'high'; global risk remains 'low'. WHO noted there is currently no animal efficacy data for the Oxford candidate.

US commits $112m for Ebola regional response; Rubio confirms $13.5m for Kenya preparedness in call with Ruto
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Kenya's President William Ruto on Thursday 29 May to confirm US support. The US committed $112m (£88m) to fund the overall regional Ebola response, with $13.5m (£10.7m) allocated specifically for Kenya's Ebola preparedness and health security. The US commitment is part of efforts to strengthen the regional response chain. Ruto said Kenya 'will continue to act transparently, responsibly, and decisively to protect lives while contributing to regional and global health security' but did not directly address the US isolation centre plans that a Kenyan court halted the same day.

BREAKING: Kenya court halts US plan to open Ebola quarantine facility in the country
A Kenyan High Court judge has suspended US plans to open a 50-bed Ebola isolation centre in Kenya for American citizens exposed to the virus in DRC and Uganda. The court barred government agencies from 'establishing, operationalising, facilitating, approving or permitting' any Ebola quarantine or treatment centre tied to foreign government arrangements. Kenya's doctors' union (KMPDU) demanded disclosure of negotiations and warned of nationwide industrial action. Kenya had no Ebola cases as of 29 May. The US has committed $112m for the regional response, including $13.5m for Kenya's preparedness. Kenya was selected for its proximity to the outbreak epicentre.

Uganda closes DRC border; Canada imposes 90-day entry ban; ECDC boosts ground presence
Uganda announced an immediate temporary closure of its border with DRC; only essential workers (medical, humanitarian, food transporters, security personnel) are allowed under strict conditions. Canada separately announced a 90-day entry ban for residents from DRC, Uganda and South Sudan. The Bahamas also imposed quarantine/isolation measures on foreign nationals from those countries. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) announced it will boost its on-the-ground presence via the EU Health Task Force. MSF's DRC director warned response infrastructure is 'still far behind' and proper containment could take several weeks.

WHO warns DRC faces 'catastrophic collision' of Ebola and conflict; Tedros to travel to DRC
WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that Ituri province is at the centre of a 'catastrophic collision of disease and conflict', saying WHO cannot 'build community trust or isolate the sick while bombs are falling'. He called on all parties to agree an immediate ceasefire to allow safe medical access. Tedros is due to travel to DRC to spearhead containment efforts. Around 3,600 people have been identified as contacts of infected individuals, and medics are racing against time to trace them. Ongoing clashes are driving mass displacement and 'severing critical containment corridors'. An experimental antibody treatment developed in the US could be introduced soon.
