Official Ebola figures revised: DRC now reports 380 confirmed cases and 60 confirmed deaths; Uganda 15 confirmed cases and 1 death. The fall from earlier 1,000+ suspected cases reflects better lab data ruling out other illnesses (malaria, etc.) — not reduced transmission. Contact tracing only ~45% of contacts (WHO requires 90%). A burial team was attacked this week in South Kivu, forced to abandon a coffin. US adds $38m bringing total US Ebola funding to $200m+. US CDC model: without strong intervention, outbreak could match or exceed 2014-16 West Africa epidemic. UK rules out airport temperature checks. WHO Tedros: teams 'catching up' but community trust is critical. Source: BBC (Fergus Walsh, Medical Editor).

3 Jun 2026

The International Council of Nurses (ICN) warned on Friday that nurses in DRC are 'scared for their safety' due to shortages of PPE and testing kits. Sixteen health workers have been confirmed infected during this outbreak. Alima's transparent 'Cube' isolation treatment units — allowing care without direct contact — have arrived in Bunia (2 units deployed, 2 more en route). More than 282 confirmed cases, 42 confirmed deaths; 1,000+ suspected cases, 220+ suspected deaths. No approved drugs or vaccine for Bundibugyo ebolavirus. MSF has opened an Ebola treatment centre in Goma. WHO DG Tedros called for a ceasefire from all warring parties to allow safe medical access. Source: BBC.

Two people have been shot dead in Nanyuki, central Kenya, during protests against US plans to build a 50-bed Ebola isolation centre at Laikipia Airbase for American citizens affected by the DRC outbreak. One victim was shot near the airbase; both bodies are in hospital morgue with gunshot wounds. Hundreds blocked roads and burned tyres; police fired tear gas. Kenya's High Court on Tuesday extended its suspension of the facility and ordered government to disclose full details. President Ruto defended the plan as a 'mutual agreement' with the US. Kenya has recorded no Ebola cases. Source: BBC.

Both suspected Ebola cases in Brazil have been cleared. São Paulo health authorities confirmed the 37-year-old DRC returnee tested negative for Ebola — his meningitis diagnosis stands. Rio de Janeiro confirmed the Belgian man from Uganda also tested negative for Ebola — his malaria diagnosis stands. Neither patient had Ebola. No Ebola cases have been confirmed outside Africa. DRC: 1,000+ suspected cases, 246+ deaths; Uganda: 9 confirmed cases, 1 death (unchanged). Source: BBC.

Three organisations are developing vaccines against Bundibugyo ebolavirus. IAVI is modifying its Zaire vaccine; it showed near-100% protection in monkeys but needs 7–9 months for clinical trials (timelines being accelerated). Moderna is applying mRNA technology used in Covid vaccines, moving 'with urgency'. Oxford's ChAdOx1 vaccine is the most advanced and could begin human trials in 2–3 months. CEPI is funding all three: 'Every day counts in the race against this deadly disease.' IAVI head Dr Feinberg warned the outbreak could be as severe as the 2014–16 West Africa epidemic (29,000 cases, 11,000 deaths). Source: BBC.

Five patients have now recovered from Ebola and left hospital in DRC. Four nurses were discharged in a ceremony in Bunia on Sunday (1 June), with WHO DG Tedros telling them: 'You are living stories that this outbreak can be stopped.' A lab worker was the first to be discharged (May 29). Health workers are among the highest-risk groups. Nurse Etienne Ezo described being 'demoralised' in isolation. Tedros and the Congolese government issued a joint statement calling communities 'at the heart of the solution'. DRC: 1,000+ suspected cases, 246+ deaths; Uganda: 9 cases, 1 death. Brazilian health authorities are now monitoring two patients in the country's two largest cities. In São Paulo: a 37-year-old DRC returnee with fever symptoms has tested positive for meningitis — Ebola test results are pending. In Rio de Janeiro: a Belgian man who arrived from Uganda showing cough, chills and diarrhoea has tested positive for malaria — Ebola test also pending. Both Ebola results are expected next week. If confirmed, they would be the first Ebola infections outside Africa since the outbreak began in DRC. WHO stresses global spread remains 'highly unlikely'. DRC: 1,000+ suspected cases, 246+ deaths; Uganda: 9 cases, 1 death (unchanged).
