DRC's 17th Ebola outbreak, confirmed Bundibugyo ebolavirus. As of May 24 (CDC): 101 confirmed + 904 suspected cases = 1,005 DRC total; 10 confirmed + 119 suspected deaths = 129 DRC deaths. Uganda: 5 confirmed cases (all in Kampala, linked to DRC travelers), 1 death — 3 new cases announced May 23. Grand total: 1,010 cases, 130 deaths across DRC + Uganda. Outbreak spans 3 DRC provinces: Ituri, Nord-Kivu, Sud-Kivu. No approved vaccine or treatment for Bundibugyo strain. US Title 42 entry restrictions since May 18. CDC situation report updated May 24, 2026: DRC — 101 confirmed + 904 suspected = 1,005 total cases; 10 confirmed + 119 suspected deaths = 129 deaths. Uganda — 5 confirmed cases, 1 confirmed death, all cases in Kampala with links to DRC. Grand total: 1,010 cases, 130 deaths across both countries. The virus has now reached Uganda's capital city, a major regional hub. Outbreak continues across 3 DRC provinces (Ituri, Nord-Kivu, Sud-Kivu). No US cases. Risk to general US public remains low.

Uganda Ministry of Health announced 3 additional confirmed Bundibugyo ebolavirus cases on May 23, 2026, bringing Uganda's total to 5 confirmed cases and 1 confirmed death. All 5 Uganda cases are in Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest city, all with clear epidemiological links to DRC. This is a significant escalation: Kampala is a major regional hub with international air connections. Contact tracing and ring vaccination protocols are being activated. CDC Level 1 travel notice for Uganda remains in effect.

CDC situation report updated May 22, 2026: 83 confirmed + 744 suspected cases = 827 total; 176 suspected deaths (CFR ~21%). Critical development: A new confirmed case has been identified in Sud-Kivu Province — the outbreak now spans three DRC provinces (Ituri, Nord-Kivu, Sud-Kivu). Uganda: 2 confirmed cases, 1 death; no further spread reported. CDC Level 3 travel notice updated to cover all three provinces. This is a rapidly evolving situation and case counts are subject to change.

CDC has expanded its Level 3 (Reconsider Nonessential Travel) notice for the DRC Bundibugyo outbreak to include Sud-Kivu Province, in addition to Ituri and Nord-Kivu provinces. The travel notice confirms no approved vaccines or treatments exist for Bundibugyo virus disease. Uganda retains a Level 1 (Practice Usual Precautions) notice. Travelers from DRC, Uganda, and South Sudan face enhanced US port-of-entry screening under the May 18 Title 42 Order.

CDC situation report updated May 21, 2026: 51 confirmed + 575 suspected cases = 626 total; 148 suspected deaths (CFR ~24%). Revised down from the May 20 count of 675 as suspected cases were reclassified. Uganda: 2 confirmed cases, 1 death — no further spread reported. Outbreak remains active across 11 health zones in Ituri and Nord-Kivu Provinces, DRC. Risk to general US public remains low.
