Bundibugyo Ebolavirus Outbreak — DRC & Uganda (17th DRC Outbreak)

DRC's 17th Ebola outbreak, caused by Bundibugyo ebolavirus, is now the largest Ebola outbreak recorded in DRC and the second largest globally. Latest data (16 August, WHO AFRO Situation Report 14; ECDC update 19 August): DRC 5,021 confirmed cases and 2,378 deaths; Uganda 20 confirmed cases and 2 deaths; outbreak total 5,041 cases and 2,380 deaths (CFR 47%). Since Situation Report 13, DRC reported 640 additional confirmed cases and 367 deaths. A total of 751 patients are hospitalised in isolation, 1,061 have recovered, 82.2% of identified contacts are under follow-up, and 55 of 151 health zones across six provinces have been affected. The first confirmed case in Bas-Uele marks spread to a sixth DRC province. Uganda declared its outbreak over on 28 July after reporting no new case since 21 June, but remains at risk of reintroduction from neighbouring DRC. International cases include two U.S. citizens medically evacuated to Germany and one imported case in France; no secondary transmission has been identified outside Africa. No approved Bundibugyo vaccine or specific treatment is available, although two Bundibugyo vaccine candidates have entered human trials and the WHO-sponsored PARTNERS treatment trial has enrolled 100 patients. As of 16 August, DRC reported 5,021 confirmed Bundibugyo virus disease cases and 2,378 deaths (CFR 47.4%). Together with Uganda's 20 cases and 2 deaths, the outbreak total is 5,041 cases and 2,380 deaths. Since WHO AFRO Situation Report 13, DRC added 640 cases and 367 deaths. Bas-Uele reported its first confirmed case, expanding the outbreak to six provinces; 55 of 151 health zones are affected. WHO Director-General Tedros told the second IHR Emergency Committee that the epidemic is moving faster than any previous Ebola outbreak and remains far from under control. Transmission has reached six provinces and 55 health zones. Two Bundibugyo-specific vaccine candidates have entered human trials, a separate candidate is moving toward a phase 3 trial after cross-protection in animal studies, and the WHO-sponsored PARTNERS treatment trial has enrolled 100 patients. WHO called for faster data sharing, stronger surveillance, sustained financing, improved access and security, and cross-border coordination.

Since the previous report (3 August): 99 new cases (Ituri 85, North Kivu 10, Haut-Uele 4) and 52 deaths. 674 patients hospitalised/isolated, 75.3% of contacts under follow-up. The outbreak has spread to 49 health zones in five provinces, with 33 still active. 151 health workers infected and 44 deaths. Uganda declared the end of its outbreak on 28 July after the last patient was discharged 16 July; WHO will continue 42-day enhanced surveillance. Uganda's Ministry of Health declared the end of the 2026 Ebola (Bundibugyo virus) outbreak. Uganda reported 20 confirmed cases (15 imported, 5 local), 18 recoveries and 2 deaths; the last confirmed case was on 21 June and the last patient was discharged on 16 July. The declaration was supported by fully traced transmission chains and enhanced surveillance with no further community transmission. Uganda reported 20 confirmed cases (15 imported, 5 local), 18 recoveries and 2 deaths; the last confirmed case was on 21 June and the last patient was discharged on 16 July.
