Kenya confirmed its first imported Bundibugyo virus disease case in a citizen who became ill while living in DRC, travelled by road to Kampala on 2 October, and flew to Nairobi on 3 October. The patient was isolated after arrival but died on 5 October. Authorities listed 28 close contacts and were tracing 23 passengers and four crew members from the flight. Kenya is the fourth country to confirm a case in this outbreak, and WHO advises against general travel or trade restrictions.

WHO's daily epidemiological table records 8,544 confirmed cases, 4,114 confirmed deaths and 2,230 recoveries in DRC as of 3 October. Including 20 cases and two deaths in Uganda and one recovered imported case in France, WHO's three-country total was 8,565 confirmed cases and 4,116 deaths before Kenya notified its imported case. The DRC total includes one patient treated in the Netherlands and two treated in Germany after diagnosis in DRC.

WHO reports that DRC expanded bed capacity from 929 to 1,510 between 27 July and 21 September, increased operational laboratories from 15 to 26, and more than doubled mobile safe-burial teams in Ituri. The revised 180-day multisectoral response plan requires US$1.3 billion over six months, while more than 1,400 additional health professionals are needed to support expanded care capacity.

WHO reported 7,890 confirmed cases and 3,799 deaths in DRC as of 23 September, with 1,966 recoveries. Bulu in Sud Ubangi and Dungu in Haut-Uele brought the affected area to 63 health zones across seven provinces. Seventy new confirmed cases were reported from 26 health zones in the preceding 24 hours, and 83.4% of identified contacts were monitored.

WHO reports that, as of 26 August, DRC has recorded 5,794 confirmed cases and 2,786 deaths across 60 health zones in six provinces. Including Uganda's 20 cases and two deaths and one imported case in France, the outbreak total is 5,815 cases and 2,788 deaths. At least 1,314 patients have recovered. In the latest 24-hour period, DRC reported 81 new confirmed cases from 19 health zones, while 82.3% of identified contacts were followed up. Health-worker vaccination with Ervebo began in parts of DRC on 27 August, with effectiveness against Bundibugyo virus in humans still unknown.

WHO published the report of the second IHR Emergency Committee meeting and confirmed that the DRC epidemic continues to meet the criteria for a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, but not a pandemic emergency. The Committee described the continued rapid growth and geographic expansion as a grave concern. Modelling presented to the Committee suggests substantial under-ascertainment, with true infections potentially three to four times higher than surveillance totals, and calls for urgent, intensified and sustained action centred on affected communities.

Uganda completed 42 consecutive days without a new confirmed case after the last imported patient was discharged on 16 July. The country reported 20 confirmed cases—15 imported and five locally acquired—along with 18 recoveries and two deaths; more than 800 contacts were identified and monitored. WHO and Africa CDC said sustained surveillance, testing capacity, infection prevention and cross-border coordination remain essential because transmission continues in neighbouring DRC.
